WEEK 6 QUESTIONS

1) According to the article how did JCP get its site listed for different keyword searches?
- According to the article J.C. Penney, who supposedly had no idea, was used by a "black hat service", in which linked over 2000 pages of related and unrelated words directly to the companies website. So in other words they cheated unknowingly.

2) Why is this such an important issue that NYT decided to investigate it and print a long story?
- This article is an important issue because JCP was ranked amongst the top of, the google search tool, and it is the most common way to browse in today's age. Although it was a legal approach to the use of Google, it was unfair to other companies and can be seen as a way of cheating.

3) What is the role of Google to ensure that companies don't game its search engine?
- Google's role of ensuring companies do not game its search engine, is to keep a close eye on the companies, especially the major companies, and make sure that they are not using a black hat technique to gain attention. If this is the case then Google will take action in removing some of the unfair searches.

4) What typically happens to businesses when they invoke the wrath of Google?
- When companies invoke the wrath of Google they are typically "demoted". This means that the company is penalized and moved further down the page in a google search, so the company will not be seen at the top anymore.

5) Play with the keyword estimator, linked in the article, for three different words, and post the CPC. What does it mean?
- While using the keyword estimator through Google AdWords I chose three words: the first word I looked up was Dog which had a CPC of $.80, Beer had a CPC of $.56, and Sox had a CPC of $1.31. CPC stands for Cost Per Click, which basically states how much an advertiser will have to pay for a word through Google.

Week 4 Questions

1) Which consumer trends dominated the digital media landscape in 2010?
-The consumer trends that dominated the market in 2010 included Ecommerce sites, Social Networks, Online video websites, and several others.

2) How are people spending their digital media consumption time?
-Many people are spending there digital media consumption time on social networks now and days. Facebook alone accounted for 12.3% of timpent on the internet in the US. But they are still not the most visited sites as Portals rank as much as 20% of interenet users.

3) Which new and emerging technologies and services are capturing the attention of the marketplace?
-To no surprise social networks are becoming one of the major services for online advertising. Due to the huge amount of share these sites have, especially facebook, it is easy to reach specific audiences. Television sites such as Hulu are also becoming common areas for the marketplace.

4) What is the state of the digital advertising market?
- The state of the digital advertising market is on a rise with display advertising in particular. People are finding new ways to reach people on the internet more effectively now through different sources then before. It is becoming easier to reach specific audiences now and advertisers look to this often.

5) How is the rapid increase in mobile media usage changing consumer behavior?
- Mobile media is becoming the new thing now. With all of these new smart phones that can give a person access to the interenet and capability of downloading apps pretty much wherever they please it is to no surprise. What a person can do at home on their computer can pretty much be done in their hand. The Ipad is becoming increasingly popular too and holds a lot of the same functions as a laptop at half the size. So these items are often keeping people constantly connected to the web or other ad hotspots.

Week 2 Discussion Questions

1) The basic premise behind the new Old Spice commercial'sis that the consumer has a say in what can be done. Old Spice made more than 180 videos based on what the consumers thought should happen. It is an effective way of advertising and promoting the company because its allowing consumers to have a direct interaction.

2) There is no surprise that the Old Spice Response Video's were ranked number one in the years top 10 innovations. The Old Spice commercials are more memorable then any other commercials that I can remember last year. The commercials were funny and clever which was effective for attracting its male audience, because what kind of male does not like humor in a commercial?

3) Again, the idea of getting the consumer more involved with the advertiser and company seems to be a common feature in new marketing. It is an effective way of building consumers and interacting with them too to build a good relationship.

4) I would not be surprised if the gaming industry sees an increase with in-game advertising. This already takes place in some games, but it with some games like Call of Duty attracting over a million people it would be a miss for advertisers to miss this mass audience. Perhaps there could be ad videos during the loading screens instead of a blank loading screen.

5) Mobile advertising definitely seems to have the most potential in the future. Mobile devices are bigger then ever and are still on the rise. People constantly have their mobile devices on them too, so advertisers can reach their consumers anywhere they please.

Week 1 Questions

1) A digital immigrant is basically someone who does not know the digital world (i.e. computers, mobile phones, etc.) very well. They are overwhelmed by the constant changing of the digital world. Generally, this person is older, probably 40 years old and up.

2) Some of the skills that may help transfer a digital immigrant to digital native could be something as simple as working more with these technologies. These mediums are accessable to anyone and getting to know them is a must. It can also help to talk more with younger people or children, because they have been around these things their entire lives and are acustomed to them. On a scale of 1 to 10, I find my self as a 6 or 7 in the digital world because there is still a lot out there that I do not know about.

3) It is harder to connect with consumers now more then ever because there is that many more ways to reach them, which makes it hard to pin point where exactly to reach the right person. Old ways of advertising are becoming a thing of the past and a lot of people in the business now are not familiar with some of these new approaches too.

4) Advertising can definitely be "crowdsourced" with all of the new ways to reach people. It is important to hear what people have to say about how to get reached effectively through advertisements, and who could be better to determine what is best then the consumer themselves.

5) The opportunity admist all the chaos would be to get involved with the digital medium. It is still relatively new and there is a lot to know about it.
